Awwwww. Now I feel sorry for the chimps, too! They didn't know they were capitalist warmongers.

They were just a few years too early. Flag wavers would have worked better as an opener for this show:

Seriously, were the Dead preceded at other times by circus-type acts? I think the Karamazov Brothers were openers or on stage during 3/28/81. But particularly earlier on, did they have other bizarre opening acts?

I don't know if the Dead had any other circus type acts but I do remeber a pyschedelic juggler opening for the Starship. He had all sorts of nutty things to juggle w/ then he would go black light and his stuff was all day-glow. I know his first name is Jay and then years later I saw this guy opening for David Gillmore on the Peir in N.Y.
It was said the Gillmore experience needed more night sky so they used this guy as a time filler.

I think I'd have left after the psychedelic juggler. Why is it that the Airplane was so great and the Starship was so insanely boring? A true mystery. (But then, there was Wings ... maybe there was some kind of Boringness Flu that was going around. You were only susceptible if you'd once been great.)

Things went downhill for the chimps after that night - they tried to stay in show business, but all they could get was occasional poorly paid and humiliating appearances in adverts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq6KYdQnPHk&;feature=related
